Owensville, Missouri, Friday, June 7, 1918. $1.50 Per Year, In Advance: County Court Proceedings County Court met last Monday in the regular May term. The court was in session all week although not such a very busy terra as there seems to bo a lull in the usual number of road petitions that find their way to the regular terms of court. As a rather welcome diversion the court this time hud the pleasure of considering the advisability of vacating roads instead of pondering on the practicability, tho feasibility and necessity of establishing new highways. C. F. llensley et ul. petitioned the court to vacate a certain street, and certain alloys in the unincorporated town, Canaan, on the ground that such street and' alleyB are absolutely useless. Tho petition gigued by T. Hollandsworth, J. H. B. llensley, 1'. M. Jotl, .). W. Martin, Chas. Robcrson, Peter Hanson, W. K. Francis, S. O. Ro-berson, V. P. Uichardson, J. E. Decker, C. S. Jett and A. K. Gray, was tiled and matter continuod to next term. Canaan was at one time platted on' into streets, alleys and lots; lots were sold at high prices. This was at the timo the; Rock Island began laying its track through our county. The expectations of making Canaan a city have not as yet materialized. The court ordered tho county surveyor to view and locate the road petitioned for by Geo. S. Lockhart ct al, south of Owensville. The members of the court made a trip to Fredericksburg Tuesday afternoon to inspect a change of the county road made on the west side of the mill at that pluco. The I DHAKB Mrs. Dietrich Kahle last Tuesday was sunstruck and found almost dead in a potato patch where she had been working very hard. She is now recovering. Never in this section of tho county was a bigger concourse of1 people known to gather on Me-j morial Day to lay llowers, than' gathered last Thursday when sev-i eral hundred came nnd covered the grave of Private Fred Brehe with llowers. Rev. C. J. Raaso and Ed. A. Meyer made tine speeches. To evorpbody it was plain that no tombstone, monument or mausoleum is needed for Fred Brehe, although dead, lives in the memory j of a patriotic and grateful people.; Passing of the Prairie League ROUTE ONE NOTES Mrs. John Weller is visiting with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Rauter. Mrs. Timlin of St. Louis is visiting at present with Mr. and Mrs. Edw, Luetkeuhoeltor. Rev. O. lteimsoth went to Rosebud last Saturday to meet his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Iloimsoth, of Cole Camp. They returned home Wednesday by way of Owensville. Mrs. Fritz Brader and her daughter wero at their former homo near Owensville, clearing up the yard, looking after tho buildings and doing somo garden work. Quito a number of the boys of Route Ono went to Owensville Thursday to register and now expect soon to bo called to defend our nation. change as made was accepted by the court Thursday. Tho change of road petitioned for by John A. Skoruia, in Canaan township, was ordered made. The tax levy for 191S was fixed as follows: State ISc (samo as last year) County tax 10c (was .')5c last year), Road tax 10c and Special Road und Bridge tax 25c on tho SI00 valuation. Dramshop license will be 8200 for the State and S250 for tho County each six months. Liccnso tax on theatrical performances will bo'g't.OO per day. County licenso3 for poddlers and licenses on pool tables will be the samo us now levied by tho State. Funeral exercises wero conducted at the home at 0:00 o'clock anil at the Brick Pentecost church (of which congregation she was a member since its organization) at 12 :00 o'clock m. and the remains were followed to their lasti resting place by a vast concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends. Ferris, S72nd Aero Squadron Signal Corps, Mechanics Training School, St. Paul, Minnesota, arrived hero Thursday night to, attend tho funerul of his sister, Mrs. Emma Turner, and visit relatives.Mrs. Emma Viola Turner, wife of Charles Turner of St. Louis, was laid to rest in the Oak Hill cemetery Friday, May 31ut. She was .'ill years old and loaves to mourn her untimely death a husband, three small children, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Ferris, live sisters and thrco brothers. All tho relatives were present at her funeral and to these we extend our sympathy in their timo of sorrow,.Mrs. R. N. Bonzo returned to her home in St. Louis Sunday i after several weeks visit with her RED HUM) ; Most all farmers are expecting a bountiful crop of wheat and we think Gasconade County's number of bushels will be greater than in many years. Odd fellows enjoyed a bountiful supper given by the Rebckahs last Saturday evening in the Red Bird Hotel. A good time was had by all present and they went una) feeling happy. We had the pleasure of meeting Az.ro Breuer in Red Bird Saturday. We were glad to hear of the good health oi his father, F. D. Breuer. It was not our pleasure to attend preaching at Mt. Pleasant Sunday as usual hut wo are informed that the pastor, Rev. Win. Spurgeon, delivered a very interesting sermon.Fred Hans and family were out from St. Louis visiting Mrs Hans' father, James Sewell, and family. Mr. Hans spends most of his time on the banks of the Bourboise river which is famous for lino lisli. lie is fond of tho angling sport and is generally successful. Henry and Miss Iva Mcintosh came down to visit their uncle, N. K. Mcintosh, and family last Sunday. Henry returned in the afternoon but Miss Iva remained expecting to spend some time visiting in the neighborhood of Red Bird. We are glad to State that Miss Edith Sewell's eyes nro somo better though very weak yet. She has been troubled with granulated eyelids for about two months, part of tho time being confined to a dark room. Wo sympathize with her and hope her eyes may soon bo entirely cured. We met our venerable friend John Miller, last Saturday for the tirst time in about thirty-live years and were suprprisod to sou him looking so hale and hearty. Ferris, S72nd Aero Squadron Signal Corps, Mechanics Training School, St. Paul, Minnesota, arrived hero Thursday night to, attend tho funerul of his sister, Mrs. Emma Turner, and visit relatives.Mrs. Emma Viola Turner, wife of Charles Turner of St. Louis, was laid to rest in the Oak Hill cemetery Friday, May 31ut. She was .'ill years old and loaves to mourn her untimely death a husband, three small children, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Ferris, live sisters and thrco brothers. All tho relatives were present at her funeral and to these we extend our sympathy in their timo of sorrow,.Mrs. R. N. Mr. Hans spends most of his time on the banks of the Bourboise river which is famous for lino lisli. lie is fond of tho angling sport and is generally successful. Henry and Miss Iva Mcintosh came down to visit their uncle, N. K. Mcintosh, and family last Sunday. Henry returned in the afternoon but Miss Iva remained expecting to spend some time visiting in the neighborhood of Red Bird. We are glad to State that Miss Edith Sewell's eyes nro somo better though very weak yet. She has been troubled with granulated eyelids for about two months, part of tho time being confined to a dark room. Wo sympathize with her and hope her eyes may soon bo entirely cured. We met our venerable friend John Miller, last Saturday for the tirst time in about thirty-live years and were suprprisod to sou him looking so hale and hearty.
