BEPUBLICAN. 11 MO VOL. 7 UNION, MISSOURI. FRIDAY JUNE 9, 189a NUMBER i : Before the last election we frequently beard the question "flow -about the price of wtealf That cereal ia ruling lower in pries now than ever before known ia Chicago market. 8am Wilaon thinks be ahould be taken to the world's fair and pat On exhibition The saggestion is good one, if Col.-Gor. Stone be inoladcd in the show. There wo aid 1e militant in it. Oar frieni, the New Haven Notes, haa grown some the past two weeks, and ha a fine, health Sal appearance, and, beat of all, is now wearing its bead in front I One might wonder if balloting off school ma'ms is n't profitable fmatness. xSheiff Dosenbaoh, aentenced in the 3L Chsrles oircnit court to imprisonment and fine for killing lisjor . S. 8mith at Clayton. St. liovis Co., last sammer, bas taken At appeal to the sapreme coart of the state. Pending the prelimica lies it is said be will take a trip to Germany lor kit hoalib, which is bad ly broken down nnder the or d eal of bis trial. Some bow, the people seem to be losing confidence in banks, and in many instances anxioas to get thoir money oat of the strong lockers. Heavy runs nave been made on the Chicago banki daring the week, and in the city of Washing ton the same wa witnessed. And all of thi. so soon after be. isg assured that a demoo atic victory at the polls meant prosperity to the country, and stability to its financial institutions. Gen. Black, ex-commissioner of pensions and now democratic con-gressman from Chicago, was one of the orator at the decoration day celebration at Chicago. In the oeurse of bis speech, bo charged that the pension rolls are loaded with cowards, cheats and irauds. One might wonder if some of these frani might not date bick to the time when it was generally believed Gen. Black was endeavoring to buy the soldier vote of Indiana with pension certificates. 8am Wilson, the man who admits to having held up the Mo. Pacific truo near Pacific, this ountv, on the night of May 24, was arrested at his father's home, near Lebanon, Laclede Co , last Friday night. Instead of the many, many thousands the "band of highwaymen" was reported hav ng so. cured, Wilson got but a few paltry hundreds of dollars. Most cf the bcoty was found upon bis person, and bas been returned to the express company. The prisoner will be brought to our city for trial, cr sentence, at the next term of circuit court, the last week in this month. Last week theTribune-Republican refrained from joining tbo .ranks of tbo;e who were so uncharitably criticising our governor's incidental, or accidental, connection with the train robbery committed in our county two weeks since. Our democratic cotcmporaries we thought were doing loo maoh of that. We bad no doubts but if the governor's suggestions were heeded, if the state were lined and interlined with guari and pickets, and aH tho forces were properly armed and equipped, and had the assurance that the great state of Missouri, with ber doughty governor in lead, was at their b&ek-, that ourk chief executive's count, ranging from seven to nine of the robbers, would be verified. We were for reserving judgment at least until he bad time to corral m. Bit the. logic of eynu doo. 1161 iurry out our conclusion a. Tii c lone robber bas been captured, or volutarily surrendered. It was ft lone man and a weakly young man tba. did the deed. It might bave bocn the pangs of dyspsptia or of a diseased liver that prompted the act. It coald not 1 avo been a weak back. Some say that the chanbers of his "guns" bad nothing but blank cartridges in them. "What a day w&a that, my countrymen! when our cclonel-governor our irajoi-wauld-bo-goveriior, and a (sccro or more of o'-h-er mrajo:s and colonels, mostly the latter, lay supinely down, wh'.le tho sickly boy with Quakorpops held it over all! From Anmooaels. Mr. J. B. Potts wea-s a very pleasant smile. lie says it's a fine girl this time, and that mother and child are doing well. Mr. T. H. Snyder is the originator of anew strawberry that bids far to supercede all others. He calls it the "Snyder's liigantic" The wheat eron is loominir un in this locality. If nothing happens to it, we II have plenty "slap jacks." Cora is so submerged in water that we csii't see how it does look. People are fishing over where they ought to be plowing corn. Oatfields and meadows are looking fine. We entertain some fears that the doctor and the undertaker are full partners, but hope they: are not. Our Sunday school ia one of the best in the eeunty. Decoration day was observed here in an appropriate manner. At an early hour people commenced coming in from tbe surrounding country. By ton o'clock our streets were full, and a large procession of finely dressed men, women, and children was formed and marched from tho lyceum to the cemetery, about one mile. G lmore's band beaded the column. Pi of. O. V. Smith delivered tbo oration, and others spoke After which all the graves were most beautifully and artistically decorated with choisest flowers. After the ceremonies were over and a pleasant time had the atsembly dispersed, going home with tbe csnaciousness of having performed a pleasant duty. The Fianklln Co. Observer bas an occasional correspondent at this place, who occasiorally goesa-fishing. Oa one of his fishing jaunts ha captured a snake with two heads, lie relates tbe story thus : "While going along tho trail that leads to the banks of the Bonrbeusc river, I heard a racket in the jungle as if a death snuggle v ore going on. I wear to the spot from whence the noisa came nnd discovered the monstrocitr, a snake with two beids ! As one head was trying to travel in on direction while tho other wanted to go in tho oppostc, there was a strangle ; ; nonce the noise that bad attracted me. lhe two heads bewii ot eqnal strength, neither cou'd got the mas tery, so the snake could not travel j in any direction. While they were thus writhing and pulling, and before the b '-'add hud qu.te pulled the snake in two, I succeeded i; bug-j gmg it. J he snake is black tnd nite, and a epecies of t:io cobra." Tho professor ha shipped this great curiosity to the world's lair, wheie no doubt it will divide no-! toriely ia the Missouri department with bain nnsou and the gov-J ernor. FROH TMJB USIYEKSITY. Whil-i tbe attendance bas been as large as observing people predicted, it has by no means come op to the mark set by the officials. To tem the result must be little shoCt of galling. Whatfwaa the cauM.f The main reason is found in tbe unfinished condition of everything ; while another reason mar be found in tbe actions of the officials themselves. On the 1st of May it was given out with a great flourish of trumpets that the first" of Jjune would see everything done. : Not only is it incomplete nowthero-ond week in June, but frightfully so. One has only to step into the agricultural building to realize the force of this statement. Bods and rods of scaffolding extend in every direetion, boxes and cases fill np floor space, and confusion reigns on every band. Of course occasionally an exhibit appears in a completed state, but they are like oases in the desert. In the electric building it is nearly as badJ In the big manufacturers building considerable progress is manifested, but so much remains unfinished that one may wonder if the fair will not be over before the workmen are ca'led oft. And so it is through tbe other departments. Some day, in tbe sweet by-and-oy, order may come to those who live to see it. Cairo street, one of the most interesting of all the exhibitions in Midway Plaicance, bas been formerly opened to tbe public. , Dancing girls, trained monkeys,' whirling and singing dervishes, fakirs, and jugglers who perform marvelous tricko ; black men who give representation ol Egyptian comedies, which consist cf telling each other funny stories accompamel by loud smacks of the bauds, illustrate their modes and customs, while numerous bazaars, cafes and shops tempt the visitor to part with hU small change. But you are in Cairo to all intents and purposes. Two troops of TJ. S. cavalry are ordered from Ft. b'uellinp, V.inn., for ga?ird duty nbont tho govern raent building. It was rumoned that they wtre to be used in repnls-ing Sunday visitors, nnd fanatics aicd tbst tbey use the bav-et3 nnsparmgly. As tho government is not np to such capers, it is not expeeted that blood will i nn more than knee deep along Stonv Island ayenue. The directors are trying to figure out why it was the attendance was not larger the first Sunday the rrate.H were opened Some attrib ute it to the fact that it was not generally known to the public tbt the gates would be open. The second open Sunday has come and gone, and still no large attendance. But last Sunday tbo weather was such as would keep great crowds away any day of the week. Over in tbo Dahomey vilage is a monkey that can give points on intellectual attainments to the Average DaVonicy citizen. His na'nc is Boost. Transcript | BEPUBLICAN.
