DIED. On "Wednesday, 17th Inst, John, little son of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Thomas. Little John was Just two years old the day her died. Not many in town this week. Good sign the farmers are all at work, some have already planted their corn and it is coming op. Others are planting. ' The Congressional race bids fair to be an exciting one. Even at this early date, skirmishers are out, and soon the engage ment will become general. Judge T. O. Simpson of Ore gon county, has served out his sentence of 19 months Imprison ment in the St. Louis county jail, for making crooked whiskey. James Sins, charged with the murder of Jamec Reese, and Louis Arnold, charged with burglary, made their escape from the jail, at West Plains, last week. Our old friend, F. M. Coleman, told us that he was going to make the race again for representative of Carter county. lie is the present member, and will be hard to beat tor the position. Hon. L H. Davis, candidate for) the Democratic nomination for Congress in this district will address the people of Ripley couty at the court house in Doniphan on Wednesday, May 22nd. ' Joseph Wrignt requests us to say to the former patrons of his father's shop, that he will carry on the business at the vld stand, and will be pleased to do work for all who may favor him with their patronage, " , Mai. II. II. Bedford, of Bloom- field,Mo.,wiU deliver a lecture on temperance, next Tuesday night Maj. Bedford is one of the best speakers in S. E. Mo. and all who attend will be sur to be interested.Five families from Indiana; came in last Saturday and loca ted some five mites South of town. We also learn that other parties i from Pennsylyania bought farms in the neighborhood of Pennington's mill. ' We are glad to learn that the Wayne county papers, the "Journal" aud "Vindicator," have stopped their personal slang towards each other,' and will in the future, behave themselves as decent gentlemen, which they are. We met several old acquaint ances and formed a number of new ones, during our short slay at Van BuTen. While there we called into, the "Times" office, and saw Bro. Brown, whom we found to be a genial, social young gentlemen, and in every way worthy the support of the good people of Carter. We have been told that Cupt. NcArthur, of the steamer Mo-Arthur, says he will run his boav to thid place, if the farmers and business men here will give him business. New Orleans is the outlet for the products of all this country, and our cltizons would find it to their interest to turn all their grain trade to that point. Let there be a united ef fort amoDg the farmers, and we will have steamboat navigation. Ban-Jay School workers and Bible schools needing Hymn books and Testaments can be fnrnished by calling on D. W. One of the best of fathers, kind, indulgent and gentle. A better neighbor could not be lound. Industrious and energetic, he prospered in the world. Although he nerer professed religion, his life pointed him out as ohe who loved what was right, a)d scorned what was wrong. He leaves six children, orplmno Indeed, who have the sympathy of the entire community. Mr. Wright was aware that he would not recover from his illness, talked to his children, told them how to manage, and spoke of death without fear. He was sick oyer two weeks, being iirst takea down with Pneumonia, but the immediate cause of his death was the bursting of an abscess near the right base of bis brain. "Life's labor done, lie rest from toil." , On Sunday morning last, we, in company with Thomas Ma- brey, started to Van Buren We had a very fair road and a pleasant ride, until we reached the Chilton old mill place. Thence to Van Buren, there was no read worth speaking of, but oh, the bills, such hills as 'we never traveled over before in S. E. Mo. We arrived in Van Buren about sua down Sunday evening. Circuit court convened Monday forenoon, Judge Owen presiding. There was a larger docket than usual, and the opinion prevailed that court would last all the week, but on Tuesday morning, several that were under indictment for kukluxing or whipping some parties, plead guilty, and were fined $100 each and costs, and when we left at nocn the prospects were that they would get throngh the docket earlier than at first expected. We had a very pleas-aut time while we staid. We changed our mind about publishing only a part of Dr. Dnbney's article, and below we publish the whole letter verbatim This will end the nonsense. These and other obligation resting on society imply rights corresponding in character and extent. It is surely as lawful to prevent the developement of , criminals as to detect and pun ish them when grown. It is a fixed fact that the lead ing educators of Southeast Missouri will iiold institutes la every county of district, andwe think that an organized effort on the teachers aid school officers, ana friends of education, will aid greatly this important institute work. We would recommend that we, the teachers, school officers, and friends of educatiou la Hipley county, form ourselves into an association, known as the Ripley County Teachers Association. The State is now organized into three District Associations, and soon will add the SonthwesJt. These associations are auxiliary to the State Association; and each county may organize County Associations as auxiliary to the District Association, Our county should not be behind In united and universal effort to advance the cause of education in the Southeast. Therefore, let there be a call made by the teachers for a meeting to organu- such association as soon as practical. If teachers, school officers, and friends of educatiou, who are favorable to such an organization, (and surely all are) will send ns their names we will devote the educational column U the publication of a call to meet when and where it may bethought bust. That such a al) should be made and sncb an association should be formed no one we think, entertains a doubt, then let us have it. This is the day of advance, and let Ripley county be in the front.
