Collector Armstrong and a hundred, more or less, other citizens spent last Sunday in fighting fire in the woods, between him and the St. Johns, Atone time he ordered his most valuable household chattels carried out, but by doubling forces they Kept the fire back. At one place all tne buildings were burned but a smoke house, but as the property was not tenanted the loss is not so large. The way of the transgressor is bard in hiscaso, 1tnly, and he seems to have general Intelligence enough to feel it keenly. There was a picnic held at Her-tington Springs on the Little Mera-mec last Saturday. Fighting whiskey was ieoIy dispensed and bellig-etant demonstrations indulged i n. Millard Stewart of Moselle drew a Knife to do Borne carying, but be was not given time to accomplish anything in that lice, being knocked down by a ponderous fist. :, 7. Geo. Ming was arrested for being found under MrsRochenmacher's bed on Tuesday evening, having en-tored an open window while she was absent. This is about the eighth time he baa been caught in this peculiar position, and as there seems to no no particular Statute under which no can bo panished, the citizens would be quite pardonable for sub stituting something adequate to the occasion that would cure him. Kev. Caldwell bade farewell to his numerous friends in Union and de-parted for a further course at college in his native placo, , Allegheny City, on Monday morning, lie was more than usually liaed by the com : munity, on account of his extremely modest and nnob6trusive demeanor, and earnestness in his ministry Though so young, he preached sermons that would have been credit ble to older and more experienced ministers. lie is altogether a Tery ; promising young man. nenry Chiles, a colored man of ine prairie,' was Bhot at the place of Peter Steeples, about two or three o clock last Friday morning, the ball taking effect in his groin, and will imeiy be fatal. ThisbodK is a complete Encyclopae dia of Domestio Life and Affairs, a a volume of practical experience popularly illustratod in connected story, and is highly interesting to the lover of fiction as well as to the practical thinKers. We have no hesitan cy in saying that every household ought to have this book. Mr. Clag ett will come round again, when you will greatly ploaso yourself in sub scribing for a book. It appears the Meramee bridge is not in as dangerous condition as represented. We have the authority of a gentleman living in the vicinity that recently he was fishing under the bridge when three men rode up, and he presumed they were afraid to cross, as they dismounted ana took' a quart bottle of spontaneous courage out of one of the saddle bags and passed it around several times until it was about empty. Then they mounted, put spurs to their horses and went through the bridge on the gallop. ,., Our informant . said tho budge did not vibrate more than us ual, and that he was not acquainted with the parties. A very destructive fire from the spark of a locomotive broke out at Iron Hill on Sunday, and before it was discovered almost, bad crossed a stubbleficld and communicated with a straw stack of .Alow fcillot.- and thence to his barn in which he bad one hundred and fifty bushels of wheat, and all his hay and oats, all ot which were consumed. By superhuman effort's of Dr. Booth, Mrs. Elliot,' Miss Jennie Black and others, who broke ,the fences away, the whole premises would havo burned away. Mr. Allen's property was at tacked first, but while protecting u, the fire got round to Elliots. Philip Gieblcr was in town last riday. He is not the oldest settler, but he has a good memory, and be tells of having hoard of a dryer spell of weather than this, which was in 854 when a tremondous shower passed over a narrow strip oi coun try, where he now resides on the 4th of June, alter which there was no more falling weather until a two inch snow fell on the 2nd of December. The dry spell of that year caus ed the discovery of the spring on his premises. In other parte of the Countv. the drouth of that year be- can i May. The monotony of our little town was relieved the othar evening by a lawn party given at the residence of Mr. Todd and when I say that our Kind Host and lady did all in their power to make it pleasant 'tis useless to add that it proved to be the pleas-antest dance of the season. The grounds were beautifully illuminated with numerous lanterns whbh - cast their bright lights on the assembled company composed of about fifteen couplo. It ia supposed the fire spread from a steam thrasher. ked, on the 16th of August, Ma-lol, infant daughter of Mr. & Mrs. J. C. Byore, of Pacific, aged 11 months and 21 days. " - Tenderly they burled the fair young dead, Pausing to drop on bet grave a tear ; Cure on the marble slab at her bead, Somebody's darling lies slumbering here, Andrews, the colored bishop (?) In jail here, has a hard time of it. lie 'has applied to the brothrcn of his church everywhere for bail but fails to get any response. Ho was spending the evening at Steeples, and left about midnight to go home ; several hour's later Steeples' dogs 'treed" something in some brush or rocks, near tbo' Darn,' and the boys got the rifle and sent a ball or two to investigate the spot- The wrdsbot "struck oil" in Henry's ido, and he surrenderdd,' but Wot Id not say whether St was corn, chicK- n or something else that he was : after,- Dr. Clagett of Gray's Summit was in Union on Tuesday soliciting ord ers lor "The Complete ilome," a work on Domestic Economy in racy style, a book written by the illustrious author, Mrs, Julia M'Nair Wright. The railroad fence west of town was destroyed by fire and left an entrance for cattle into the npht oi way. After sevoral head were Killed and crippled it was roplaced with a wire fence. Tho company assembled early and danoed to the music of the St. Clair string band nntil 2 o'clock in the morn when with many thanKs to Mr. & Mrs. Todd for tboir kind hospitality they all departed for their respective homos to rest and dream of the pleasure of tho past.
