John F. Manvillo, near Moselle, is preparing to build himsolf a bank barn, forty by seventy feet, after tho style of Pennsylvania barns. It will no doubt be a model barn, and tho only ono of its kind in tho count. Every farmer ought to hnvo one. It will save its cost in the saving of grain and feed in a few years. ' ' " Wo understand there was a gentle man in town last Friday who refused to pay some taxos. that were due. The collector. ordered a deputy sheriff," Hi Andrew Jeffries, to take charge ofthogentlnman's horse, which he did, and by the limo the papers were duly mado out for the levy ho stepped up and paid. The process is very simple where there is a will. This is the first levy made for taxes and people can advise themselves from it. We are in formed that Dr.' Jackson, ill Washington, is preparing to take a' tour on the 'eastern continent, Probably he will take a glance at Ik' little fair at Paris this summer. Mr. William liuscher, sr.. intends imving his native country, Germany, n )tber visit in the spring. "I Jo first 'fsiwn ff tbr Mlllntry in 18M,fllld tlflft once since hcon across the water to the Fatherland, but he now has oc-ciisioii to go a second time. List Friday evening Wilson Leis-er, esq., of .the Union Uecokd, gave l'ucitic and our (sanctum a pleasant tall. , Mr. '' Leiser was on business connected with bis paper. He is looking first rale fat, hearty and- good-natured. PaeifiC Democrat. Mr. Bernard Beck man requests us to offer his most sincere thanks to all the kind friends who assisted him in bis recent affliction, and to those who aided in Iho singing at the fun-al. Ho '.-hopes never to forget tho empathies extended towards him in liia troubles. The adininistiator's sale of the personal effects of Gerhard Ilagc-Imsth. deceased, was well attended, Hndtho things sold well, considering that the river was almost impass-ublsand that there was another sale, Mr. Ilointicmanii's,- on the same day not six miles away.. It pays . to ad-vert me. . , Mr.'2 O'Bannon, the efficient miller lately with tho VitrBrothcrs, i i the Union Steam Mills, has associated himself with , tho Mr. James MtLard, of the famed Goodi'sMill on tho Hourbois, which they are now overhauling with a view to keep up reputation for flour, second to none i'i Iho county. ....'. ... There was a Murphy disciple in town last-Monthly. IIo wantod to commenco ''a movement" in the ehureh, w hich was very properly re- luscd him, and it seems he could gel no other foothold . to commenco tho work of reformation. Why do these follows want to operate in the churches ? Are the church goers all drunkards? Wo repudiate tho foul aspersion. There is great room for reformation from drinking in the community, we aro aware, but that class of pooplo never go near a church. Let theni como and begin, anyplace else, and all the chutch inciiibers will help, wo have , no doubt, but the church don't want to lcap the reaction ol any half-done business. Some young scamps have on one or two occasions, untied 3Ir. Fcnton's horses on which his family rode into town to attend church and which had been fastened at tho different fastening places, and compelling tho family to walk home. In the first instance they stole his bridle in addition to the trespass. : Now, ono word is all lhat we shall volunteer in this connection, and that is that tho perpetrator of such tricks will surely bo caught and punished. Wellington's birthday was appropriately celcbratod in Union. There was a good display of bunting at tho Moutier House and at several of tho business places. Tho band paraded tho street, playing ' as they marched with measured tread, and also mado the air melodious from the dome of tho '"temple." In tho evening tho dramatics were exhibited in the Theater lialltogcthei with a most vivid and striking . tableau. ot "Wuliiiigtan Crossing tho Delaware," and a b:ill filled the balance of tho evening. one of the young ladies, and the "parson" as the winner of the other". Jeffries, and Fritz Athenbach, tho latter ie ihe character of landlady, nd w: 1 as humorously renderod as cou I be considering the nature of tho ioce The tableau of ''Washington Crossing tho Delaware was Bimpty perfect and grand. , The crowded house attests to Tlio character of theso chtcrtainm moro forcibly than wo can portray them. After a vory interesting discussion and other services, tho Con vention adjourned to meet in Union on Friday, "August 23d, 1878, being tho fourth Friday of the month. . Th Dramatic Socioty deserves a notice of special commondation for the admirable entertainment they gave on Washington's birthday evening. Whilst they aro all amateurs and all lellow citizens, soveral appeared on the stage for tho first time, but their native tact and efficient 'drilling made them appear like veterans in the business. Mr. Kirkman's role of the theological student, with smooth face and white tie, kept the laughing propensities ot the audience in a continual strain, which tho rendering of Mia. Hessel-meyor s part broke out into repcate3 peaU of laughter. Mrs. Weisel and Miss Emma Bauer carried out their respective parts as eligible young ladies with most desirable effect, seconded by Mr. John Achenbacb as father, and Mr, Wrr-.! Locwcr tn the character of lover, of shodied of consumption, leaving a ! cattle, or of horsos or mules. family of eight children, four of whom nro still living. He has been a citizen of tho coun ty for over fifty j-oars, and tho occu pant ot his Into homestead over foi ty years. He was apparently in good health iho day previous to his death, and was in Union, calling around on his friends, and on his return after retiring to rest complained to Mrs. Voorhces, his daughter, of a pain or peculiar feeling in hm breast. After bathing his breast with some lini ment ho said he felt better, and the family also retired, and in tho morning, finding he did not rise us early as usual, the went in to eeo him and found him dead. Ho has gono the way all must go to realize what there is of the unknown future. He was a just man, unostentatious, yet generous. Ho was kind to the poor, helping all whom ho found worthy of help. He had many friends, and no enemy that wo over heard of. Ho was buried in tho Union cemetery, and his remains were followed to tho tomb by all who could como out, and tho church was very full of thoBO who came to tho services in respect to his memory, which were conducted by Rev.
