The Lawrence Chieftain was founded by John and William H. Cecil in 1876. Established as Lawrence county’s premier Democratic newspaper, The Chieftain covered local and national party politics. In 1906, after thirty years as publishers, the Cecil brothers sold The Chieftain to Herbert B.S. Burke. John Cecil stayed on as the paper’s foreman, and eventually bought the paper back from Burke. Following John Cecil’s death in 1930, his daughter Virginia Cecil took over as editor and publisher of The Chieftain. In 1942, Virginia Cecil sold The Chieftain to J.W. Brown. In 1972 The Lawrence Chieftain was purchased by the Mount Vernon Publishing Company and consolidated with The Lawrence County Record.
