The Critic, was a controversial socialist paper published at several location during its approximately 10 year run.  The owner and editor of the paper, Charles N. Walker first published the paper in Portageville, New Madrid County, Missouri beginning in 1905 through 1912 when he moved the paper to Anderson, Indiana.  Walker states in the June 11, 1915 edition of the Critic states “I published the Critic in Portageville. Missouri, seven years, and thought I could improve my financial condition by moving to Anderson, Ind.”   Walker also states in the same June 11 issued “I was solicited to move The Critic to Hayti, Missouri as Pemiscot county was bankrupt.” Walker published the paper in Hayti from 1913 through the summer of 1915 when he moved the paper to Piggott, Arkansas.
