The Advocate was established in 1876 by publishers Jones and Orem. S.C. Mace purchased The Advocate in 1880 from the Newman brothers. The Advocate was sold to G.W. Benedict in 1887. In 1891 the paper was purchased by brothers H.H and C.A. Mitchell. That same year the Mitchell brothers retired The Advocate to make way for their new newspaper, the Henry County Republican. The Advocate was the primary Republican newspaper for Henry County, and covered all local and political news.
