Edwin H. Vemmer, a former prison guard and teacher, started the Gerald Journal. The independent paper had the heading “Publishes all the county news” and it was true to its word. Reporting on everything from local comings and goings to national news, the Journal was able to develop a large reader base in the area and become a very successful county newspaper. Vemmer retired due to ill health around 1964 and passed the paper to his son-in-law Robert A. Edmonson. He continued to publish the paper for another year, but the Gerald Journal seems to have lost its soul without its founder and so Edmonson ceased publication in 1965.
